This is a lens I purchased to replace a Tamron 70-300mm lens that wasn't cutting it for me at the long end of its range.

The Pentax lens here is a fantastic lens for its price. It isn't a limited, and for 0, you shouldn't expect perfection. However, if you are a hobbyist, like myself, and you'd like to be able to shoot your camera for 300 mm (in addition to all those between), this lens works well.

I've found that its strengths lie at the long end rather than the short end like the Tamron did, and overall it works well over the full 55 to 300 mm range. The other thing I like about it is that it covers that 55 to 70 mm range that some of the other non-Pentax lens don't cover, yet could be needed if you are adding such a lens to complement the kit lens with your camera.

Overall, I'd say this lens is more of the type you will use in a longer setting, meaning shooting towards the infinite end of the focus range. Its minimum focus distance is not too close, and when you are on that order of distance (i.e. < 50 ft), I actually think the Tamron lens was a bit sharper and included the ability to focus at a more macro type level. This lens does not provide that ability, although an extension tube could help.

I do like how this lens allows you to manually adjust focus while the autofocus in engaged. This is something all camera and lens manufacturers should strive for. It is also nice in terms of size. For a 55 to 300 range, it is actually pretty light, mostly due to its slower aperture settings f4-5.8 at the fastest. That isn't great for low light settings, but then few zoom lenses are. I use the lens for landscapes or elements of landscapes, and find that a tripod is quite useful anyway since at 300 mm, one really is working at the limits of their ability to handhold a shot anyway. It is easier, however, given the smaller size of this lens just not ideal.

well tis lens amazed me... not just because i came from the kit from the t2i, is everything! the build quality, great shape and weight in your hand, the quality of your bokeh..
ok in order... first the good things
first is a truly walkaround lens. great weight (not too heavy, but not too "kit" neither). the zoom and the focus ring is as smooth as you can get but very accurate.
for the ones who have the Canon Zoom Pack 1000, the lens does fit. i guess it wont fit any longer one.
the quality of the pictures really amazed me, and you know that the ones you get from the kit lens are great ones! the bokeh is really beautiful (7 rounded blades aperture), the zoom range is the right one for walking with it.. no chromatic aberration at all ( at least compared with the kit lens) but when is in 17, at 2.8 you can see some at 100
% crop so..
HSM is REALLY quiet.. I mean, the only way to listen this baby running is in your room at night with the door closed! and is fast.. not as fast as an L series, but is fast.
the price is great too.. i guess that the equivalent from canon is the 15-85 and is almost 300 bucks more :s
the macro function is a plus very welcomed for me :)

now, the bad ones
no full time autofocus... this is annoying... you still have to be careful to not turn the focus ring when you're in autofocus and that's crap.. :s
the OS stoles some battery power.. so just don't expect the same amount of pictures that you had with the kit lens..
72 mm filters are kind of expensive.. but after all, this is an expensive hobby (this lens is not an expensive one, but is still 100$ more than a s90) so.. guess is not a problem..
when you have the OS on and turn off the camera, there a weird noise in the lens.. nothing to worry about but is there so...
this is something weird and unexpected, and i'm going to try to explain it (sorry my english by the way)
I think this lens is "darker" than the kit... how is that?? well, if you take a picture with the kit lens, and put this one on the camera, and you don't move anything (aperture, exposition, etc) the picture will be darker... you have to move up a little bit the exposure compensation.. so I don't know why is this, and i'll be glad if someone could explain it..


overall a 7 stars lens (not 8 because the lack of full time autofocus) but amazon only allow me 5 stars so.. you know what? BUY IT!
P.S.: i know is not important, but the looks of this lens in the camera is also veeery good! :)

When looking for a great bring along digital camera most times you just know you have to give up some functionality. Not so with the Canon SX200 Power Shoot. Continue reading and I will not only uncover this surprise function but highlight all the many great features provided on this economically priced must have digital camera.

One of the best parts of this fun camera is that the 12x zoom is built into its portability. Imagine being out and about and seeing that perfect scape shot and wanting to zoom in and being able to on a whim. You no longer need to have 'the bag' full of photo accessories just in case the perfect moment arises. No longer will you get a small speck in the center of your picture attempting to capture your child out on the soccer field. Also fun is the 16:9 aspect ratio along with the standard 4:3 ratio.

The SX200, which has been around a few months, represents the new stylistic direction of Canon's Power Shot models. For those with an adventure for things in motion the Canon SX200 Power Shot tracks faces with ease and provides many functions that will allow even the novice ultimate creativity.

The Canon SX200 offers focal lengths ranging from 28mm wide angle to 336mm telephoto and offers true optical image stabilization which is a must on zoom range. The SX200 also was built with some thoughts of its own. The DIGIC 4 image processor handles post-processing for the 12.1 megapixel gem. If you are looking for a digital camera to carry in your pocket this is perfect for let's say a coat pocket, a little too large for a shirt pocket. But considering the lens that is built in it is worth the extra girth that has to be accommodated.

To those of you that are loyal Canon users the functions are similarly located to other fine Canon digital cameras. The Canon SX200 Power Shot has video mode for those that love to see it all again in action. As an experienced user the SX200 offers independent control of both aperture and shutter. So whether you like the 'everything' automatic option or the self-control option this great little camera is for you.

After tons of browsing reviews for superzooms from Nikon, Sigma, and Tamron, I took a gamble on the Sigma for reasons I found all over the reviews: low distortion, HSM (focus), and bokeh. And below is what I found after using it for a while:

Pros:
1. The most surprising factor on a D90 body is that it is only slightly bigger than D90's kit lens 18-105mm VR, and therefore IT DOES NOT BLOCK THE FLASH! I was almost ready to squeeze some money for an external flash, but it was put on hold because the camera flash can work fine.
2. Virtually no lens creep (and there is a lock button in case it happens). Quality construction that is.
3. Nice bokeh, as usual Sigma lenses have creamy bokeh, which is a big plus for such zoom lenses.
4. When in manual focus, the focus ring is very smooth

Cons:
1. The biggest problem for me is no manual overriding the focus. Auto focus would lock the focus ring on the lens, and the ring actually would rotate when it is focusing. Only when switching to manual focus can I turn the focus ring.
2. As indicated in most reviews, the sharpness may not be optimal (I can only compare it to Nikon 18-105mm). BUT it is not that bad, even for a pixel peeper like me, I am fine with its sharpness most of the time when looking at it @100%.
3. OS functions kind of oddly (to me). The Nikon 18-105mm turns VR on only when I half-press the shutter, otherwise it is off. But Sigma 18-250mm seems to have it on for a certain time. When the camera is idle for some time, OS is then turned off, and you can hear it from the lens. Wondering if this is wasting more battery. Also as indicated in the reviews, the OS doesn't seem to be as solid as Nikon's or Tamron's stabalization. But of course, it's no big deal when you have a steady hand.

Overall, it's a 5 star for me. Good features, quality, price, and some minor cons. I was worried the most about its sharpness, but it turned out satisfactory. So I am very happy with it.

Filters are plastic or glass layers placed in front of the lens of a camera to block certain light waves to reach the sensor. Although most filters are designed for DSLR lenses, generic filters can also be purchased and used together with compact digital cameras.

There are many filters out there but I am going to talk about three of the most useful types.

The first one is called the UV filter. UV stands for ultraviolet and it is the electromagnetic rays that can damage your skin and your camera sensor. If most of your photography activities are indoors then this filter may not be useful for you. But it is extremely necessary for outdoors. This filter not only protects the sensor from ultraviolet rays but it also physically protects the front of the lens. This is one of the most generic and cheapest filter but highly essential.

The second one is called the CP-L filter. This filter is actually a polarizer. The filter has a polarizer that can be rotated on a thin surface. This filter allows photographers to adjust certain light rays to pass through the lens and onto the sensor. This filter is handy to minimize reflections from a subject. For example, when shooting a lake, a polarizer may be used to reduce the reflection of the lake, enabling the camera to visibly see the fishes swimming in the lake.

The third one is called ND Grad. Filter. This is an acronym for Neutral Density Graduation filter. Unlike the previous two filters, this filter is separated into two separate regions. The filter is separated into half and one region is darker than the other. The dark region gradually becomes light as it approaches the other half. This filter is useful for landscape photography when the sky is usually overexposed to compensate the exposure of the land. This filter is use to darken the sky and balances the exposure stops between the sky and the land to produce an equally exposed subject. With this filter, the brightness range of the composure is also reduced thus solving the subject-brightness range problem in cameras

There are a few classifications for this filter. There are usually two values of an ND Grad. Filter: 0.3 and 0.6. The 0.3 filters are used for 1 stop compensation where as the 0.6 filters are used for 2 stops compensation. (Each stop is the stop difference between the sky and the land) For each value, there's soft and hard graduation from the dark region to the light region

All lens filters are also categorized with their diameter. That is all about filters now. If you have some money to spare, get a filter today and try it out! There are lots of potentials in photography when using a filter. Ask your local store for some recommendations as well.

I just purchased this lens, the reason for purchasing this lens was to photo Bald Eagles, I'm tired of trying to get good pictures when the Eagles are 200 plus yards away. I have plans on going down to the Conowingo Dam in M.D. to photo, however you don't dare go there without a 400mm lens or above for fear you may get laughed out of the place, and for fear that making a 160 mile round trip was a waste of time. After reading weeks of reviews on the lens I along with most people was questioning if the focus at 500mm would let me down. The Canon 400mm is a great lens however I wanted the extended distance. I'm not in this for a profession just a hobby so I'm not looking to spend ,000-,000, I decided to make the leap yes buying this lens was a leap for me. The 1st thing I did was go out on a humid day and take some photo's of a tree with leaves off in the distance on an overcast morning to me this was perfect to try and make the lens not focus, I figured with the overcast day, and the leaves(low contrast) there would be no way I would get a sharp clear focus for sure I figured there would be softness around the edges, well I was wrong the leaves and bark are clear, and sharp at 500mm. The last photo I took was handheld with the stabelizer on I could not tell the difference from the 1st photo's taken on a tripod from the handheld photo. The lens has a rough unfinished feel to it which adds to making the grip more sure. The weight is a bit heavy, but my guess is when your building a large lens with everything that this lens has its going to be a bit heavy, if you want a light lens then get one that is made out of plastic. If you decide on getting this lens I would get a filter not too expensive under .00, why take a chance of scratching the lens. All in all the lens focuses with no problem, is quick, and quiet.

Learn Digital Photography - Helpful Hints to Take Pictures of Fireworks

No matter what tip you have in play, make sure to check your results every so often during the fireworks display. Take multiple shots at the beginning and check on their quality and make adjustments as needed. Once this is done, you will not have to check after every shot, but do monitor your shots periodically to prevent having taken an entirely bad batch.

Here are a few helpful tips when taking pictures of fireworks:

"Find Out the Direction of the Wind - You want to shoot up wind, so it goes Camera, Fireworks, Smoke. Otherwise they'll come out REALLY hazy."

Shoot from a little further back and with a little more lens, you can set the lens to manual focus, focus it at infinity and you will not have to worry from that point on.

Take full benefit of zero processing costs and shoot as many pictures as possible (more than you'd generally think needed) in order to raise your chances of getting that "perfect" shot."

"Make sure you are ready to take pictures of the first fireworks. If there isn't much wind, you are going to end up with a lot of smoke in your shot. The first explosions are usually the sharpest one."

Find some black foam core and set your camera to bulb. Begin the exposure when the fireworks start with the piece of foam core in front of the lens. Every time a burst happens move the foam core out of the way. This will create multiple firework bursts in one exposure.

"Another tip I would add to this is pre-focus if possible (need to be able to manually focus or lock down focus for good) before the show starts so other elements in the frame are sharp They did mention that you only need to focus once but its a lot easier to take a few shots before the show starts and check them carefully rather than wait until the show has begun and you are fiddling with focus instead of watching fireworks!"

I hope these suggestions help but it doesn't have to end there. Experiment with these tips and try out others. Take some shots with a wider perspective, silhouettes and spectators around you watching the display. Aiming your camera to the sky can result in some good shots, but are expected. By creating a different viewpoint, your shot can be spectacular. Incorporating other elements be it people, buildings, landmarks or a skyline can produce different but amazing results.
